Day 71: Mon 18 Jul - Julia Creek

9 (feels like 6) - 29 (feels like 24) deg C, fine and sunny, but the wind came back

We were out on the bikes about 9:15am after it had warmed up a tad. First stop was at the info centre to get a town map and list of attractions. In the Info Centre complex there are three old railway fettlers' huts that have been relocated there from Hughenden railyards, restored and are now used to display historical information. It was all very well done, especially when you consider how small JC is.

We then had mornos in town and the coffees and eats were good. It was then off to an historic site about 5km out of town. We'd seen the sign when we drove in yesterday. It turned out to be a WWII bunker that housed a generating plant supplying power to RAAF direction finding station called the "Round House" and to barrack buildings nearby. This building was built with lots of steel reinforcing. To try and demolish it, a double charge of explosive was used resulting in damage being done to the corners, but the old girl didn't budge. Certainly testament to how strong they used to make things back in those days.

We stopped in at the airport on the way back into town which was nothing to write home about. Back into town to try and photograph every building, or so it seemed. In the main a well maintained and neat town full of interesting sights; well worth the two days we've spent here. Task completed, it was back to the van for lunch. Wendy then went back to the info centre to check out the Dunnart. A fluffy brown marsupial with a body length of 100-135mm, a tail of 60-105mm and is super cute. While she was in town Wendy did some more food shopping before heading back to the van.

Greg helped Bob check out his van brakes, then went for another ride. The tanks were topped up in preparation for our departure tomorrow.

Pre-dinner drinks were had at 5:30pm, then dinner, blogging and bed.
