Day 69: Sat 16 Jul – Burketown to Jack and Lils Rest Area free camp, 355km; total towed: 6 999km

10 (feels like 4) – 28 deg C, another sunny day in North-Western Queensland, with only a slight breeze

We left the van park just before 8am, stopping at the dump point a few km out of town. Business completed, we didn’t stop again until we reached Gregory. And, yes, we had Murray’s muffins for mornos again, with a van-brewed coffee.

Next stop was at the Burke & Wills Roadhouse, not for vehicle fuel, but human fuel. There were many a large number of RVs at the roadhouse today, more than we’ve ever seen at any roadhouse. We enjoyed our lunch from the supplies in the van today. Back on the road heading towards Julia Creek (another new road for us in our caravanning adventures) and we finally called it quits at 2:15pm when we arrived at our pre-determined free camp for the night. After the set-up was complete, Greg had to have his afternoon cuppa tea, then went for a walk around the area with Bob, whilst Wendy had a short rest. The free camp borders a very large cattle property, with a very well-constructed fence, complete with an equally impressive firebreak. As evidenced from the trip today there are lots and lots of cattle out this way. We also saw the results of all the night driving done by the trucks out West, the number of roadkill we saw was substantial. Very sad indeed. Of course, in the wild the death of a roo, wallaby, pig or anything brings out the scavengers. The hawks, crows, kites, eagles, etc had a smorgasbord.    with Bob, whilst Wendy had a short rest.

After our arrival we were all sitting outside, however, had to retreat to our respective vans as the flies are plentiful and ever so friendly. The drone was released today, however, the scenery was not that spectacular, so the drone was not aloft for long.

The rest of the afternoon was spent in the van reading and crocheting. Pre-dinner drinks were had, then dinner and a spot of star gazing. Only one satellite and four shooting stars were observed. Rather a quiet night in the sky considering the moon hadn’t yet come up and the ambient light was zero.  The Milky Way was gorgeous.

Wedgie, they are too fast to take a decent picture
