Day 54: Fri 1 Jul - Mt Surprise

18-26 deg C, a shower overnight, overcast all day, with patches of sunshine, drizzly as we are writing this

Greg did his early morning walk and Wendy walked the rows of the van park. After breakfast we rode out on the O'Brien Creek Road to nowhere in particular. We came across some cattle on the side of the road and whilst they are quite used to vehicles, they are not sure of these bicycle thingys, so ran off ahead of us. Perhaps they thought we were the station's motor bikes and they were about to be fed somewhere, or were being mustered. They looked a tad stressed, so we proceeded with caution until we came to a grid and they knew they couldn't go any further so stopped and stared at us as we rode over it! Cows can be silly sometimes.

Not long after the grid the dirt road became rough with corrugations and Wendy called time about the 6km mark. It was up hill into the wind on the way home so we got a decent workout even though it was only a 12km ride. We stopped in at the van park's café and procured a couple of vanilla slices to have with coffee back at the van; the slices were surprisingly good (pun intended). Greg then had a lay down on the bed whilst Wendy continued with her crocheting of another beanie.

We thought the Savannahlander Train was due in Mt Surprise at 12pm, so off we toddled to the train station (Wendy also took the opportunity to empty the potty, the only dump point in town is adjacent the station; the vans were queued this morning all through town). About 12:10pm, we called in quits and went back to the van for lunch and another rest. We later found out it was due at 2pm, and Greg went down to get some photos to prove it did actually arrive. There are no sleeping facilities on this train, so all passengers must alight and are put up in hotel rooms and cabins here in Mt Surprise.

Wendy spent the afternoon planning stays for after Karumba. Adels Grove and Burketown are now booked, so we have to go. Given that Adels Grove is still 10 days from now, we are hopeful the rain will not have dampened the roads toooooo much.

Post-planning drinks were had under our awning a little earlier than usual. Dinner was had after, then an episode of "8 out of 10 cats does countdown", then bed.

Wrap-up and Reflections

The main thing we learned on this trip was to stay flexible. Bad weather interrupted us 25 days into the trip, meaning we had to spend three...
