No actual temps as we had no internet, but it was fresh in
the morning, to just nice during the day, to cool at night
We left our salubrious free camp (we were the only two vans)
a tad before 8am and arrived at Gregory Downs for an early morning tea about
9:15. Whilst Wendy made the coffees in the van, Greg followed his nose to a
café across the road operating out of a 20ft container and came back with two
apple and cinnamon muffins. They were still warm and crunchy on the outside and
filled the mornos spot in the tummies nicely. We had a wander along the main
street that is Gregory, and Wendy made a phone call to mum and dad via one of
the Telstra phone boxes (for free) outside the Gregory Pub.
Back on the road (a mix of very smooth bitumen to very rough
dirt and everything in between) towards Lawn Hill and we arrived at Adels Grove
camping ground next to Lawn Hill Creek just after 11am. It was just as well we
were early as we got the best sites (we think) in the park along the back
fence. We think we are on site #44, but the numbering is a little relaxed.
Another new road for us.
Upon opening the van, Wendy was met with another disaster
akin to the one encountered at Kenilworth. The inner glass door of the oven had
smashed again and there were a million diamonds in the van, just not the kind
that Wendy likes! The oven door had become unhinged during the drive allowing
the inner door to come loose. Upon further inspection, the shower door latch
had wiggled its way loose and allowed the door to swing freely. Or perhaps it
was the entire shower frame that had skewed such that the door will not close.
And, then we found the extractor fan in the shower had become detached from
it’s mounting and was sitting on the screen! We also saw that the microwave was
about to dislodge but didn’t. Greg has
removed the fan from the shower and re-attached the oven door. Tomorrow we will
look at the microwave housing. The microwave is still working ok so no harm
done there. We had already booked the van in for a service at Majestic
Caboolture in Sep, so we will add all these maladies to the list of things that
need looking into. This van has survived the road to and from King Ash Bay
better than it did this road which didn’t seem half as bad. One thing about
caravanning, there’s never a dull moment. The main thing is that no person was
harmed in making it to this campground; stuff doesn’t matter.
After lunch, Greg and Bob went for a ride to recon the
starting point for the walks. Wikicamps said it was 3.2km, but Wikicamps always
gives you a straight-line distance. 3.2km turned into 10km, with the last 4km
being on dirt, and very rough dirt at that. Whilst the boys did that, the girls
enjoyed an ice-cream and a wander through the Grove along Lawn Hill Creek. They
had been talking about the swimming holes and what nasties could be lurking,
and as Wendy was taking a picture of the small rapids, Noel sighted a snake in
the water; even more reason not to be swimming here (never mind the crocodiles
and that it would be cold!).
After stretches and exercises, pre-dinner drinks were had
next door, then dinner in our own vans.
