Day 20: Sun 8 May - Charleville

8 (feels like 5) - 21 deg C, sunny and windy to cloudy, to sunny in the afternoon

While on their early morning walk the boys discovered that the Heinemanns Bakery was open on Sunday morning. Must support the locals! Because the temperatures are plummeting now, we decided to put the flanny sheets on the bed today. Wendy washed and dried the normal ones, before packing them away for later on in the trip.

After breakfast and an appropriate amount of time to let it settle, we hopped on the bikes and rode the 1.2km to the bakery. As we were about to make ourselves comfortable, a local (Keith) asked if he could sit down with us. No problem we said. It was good coffee, Greg had a Ned Kelly pie and Wendy had a raspberry and white choc (a few tiny scraps) muffin. We would probably still be there chatting with Keith if Wendy hadn't stood up to suggest we really should be moving on to see the sights we wanted to. It was lovely for him to join us and he had some wonderful yarns up his sleeve.

Next up was the Historic House Museum, that was closed last time we were here (2020), probably due to COVID. Whilst there was the usual old stuff, there was also some other old stuff, such as in the music room; there was a working gramophone that was playing some old-style music. See photos for old stuff.

It was then out to the airport to check out the Royal Flying Doctors Charleville Base, the WWII Secret Base (an American Base, that is not so secret anymore), and some hard standings leftover from when the yanks left and took all their buildings with them. We could make out the old armoury, a hangar (now used by the RFDS) and revetments, built to protect parked aircraft from enemy fire.

After all that excitement, it was back home for lunch via the Graham Andrews Park, the Big Red Chair, and the Steiger Vortex rain-making gun, that apparently worked in Europe, but had absolutely zero effect in Australia.

After lunch and a little rest, the boys went off on another ride, whilst Wendy decided to do another load of washing just in case the predicted rain does arrive and we can't get stuff dry.

Pre-dinner drinks of cider purchased at the Apple Farm at Stanthorpe were had prior to a dinner of Thai green curry chicken with Jasmine rice, cooked by Bob, our very own personal chef. It was delicious and was followed by a few wines and story-telling. A great night under clear skies.

Bed was a tad later than usual due to the more social night.
